The recent hybrid event, “Fire Safety and Europe’s Climate Ambition: The Role of s-Sustainable Flame Retardants in Europe’s Energy Transition”, held on 14 February 2024 at the European Parliament, brought together a distinguished panel of experts to discuss the critical role of sustainable flame retardants in supporting Europe’s ambitious climate and energy transition goals.
Hosted by MEP Adam Jarubas, the event provided a platform for a rich dialogue on how emerging fire safety challenges can be addressed through innovative and environmentally sound solutions. Pinfa, the Phosphorus, Inorganic and Nitrogen Flame Retardants Association, spearheaded the organisation of this pivotal event. As a sector group within Cefic, pinfa represents a collective vision among manufacturers and users of non-halogenated flame retardants, aiming to enhance fire safety while minimising environmental and health impacts. The agenda proposed a comprehensive exploration of sustainable flame retardants, their design, recycling challenges, and their essential role within the fire safety toolkit.
“The discussions touched upon the broader implications of fire safety for the energy transition, highlighting the work of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) on safe and sustainable design frameworks and pinfa’s roadmap for aligning with the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability”, explains Jakub Stefaniak. Insights from academia and industry further enriched the discourse, covering research, development, and practical applications of flame retardants in achieving a balance between fire safety and environmental sustainability.
