On 22 May 2024, the prestigious EAE Awards Ceremony took place at the THON Hotel EU in Brussels, Belgium. Organised by the European Association for External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems (EAE), this event celebrated outstanding projects utilising ETICS (External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems) to enhance energy efficiency and architectural excellence across Europe. With EUMEPS proudly sponsoring the awards, our representative, Jakub Stefaniak, Technical Affairs Manager participated in the ceremony, highlighting our commitment to promoting sustainable and innovative EPS solutions.
Celebrating Energy Efficiency and Architectural Innovation
The EAE Awards Ceremony, themed “Energy Efficiency meets Architecture“, attracted around 70 experts from 10 EU member states, the United Kingdom, and Türkiye. The gathering included architects, consultants, energy efficiency specialists, European Commission officials, project developers, ETICS manufacturers, and leading suppliers. This high-level event underscored the critical role buildings play in the EU’s ambitious climate goals, particularly in the context of the Green Deal and initiatives like Renovate2Recover and REPowerEU.
Jakub Stefaniak shared his reflections on the event, stating, “It was inspiring to see such a diverse group of professionals united by a common goal – enhancing energy efficiency through innovative building solutions. The EAE Awards truly demonstrate how energy-efficient buildings and superb architecture can go hand in hand.”
An Insightful and Engaging Programme
The day’s programme was divided into two insightful sessions. The first session focused on the current and future framework conditions of the ETICS sector, with a specific emphasis on energy-efficient construction and renovation. Highlights included the unveiling of the “Energy Efficiency Guide 2024 – A true Renovation Wave for a Sustainable Future” developed by FIW München. This guide is a valuable resource for stakeholders aiming to advance energy efficiency in Europe’s building stock.
Jakub noted the significance of the guide, mentioning, “The European Energy Efficiency Guide 2024 is a vital tool that will help drive the Renovation Wave forward. It was great to see FIW München, with whom EUMEPS has a longstanding collaborative relationship, presenting such impactful research.“
Recognising Excellence in ETICS Projects
The second session was dedicated to the EAE Awards 2023/2024 celebrations. The awarding ceremony, moderated by architect Niko Wouters and Ardian Joyce from Renovate Europe, highlighted 14 shortlisted projects from 14 countries. Five projects, both new builds and renovations, received the prestigious EAE Awards, while two additional projects were honoured with special mentions.
“The quality and innovation showcased in the nominated projects were remarkable,” Jakub commented. “It was an honour to witness the recognition of such exceptional work that advances energy efficiency and sustainability in the built environment.”
Highlighted Projects and Winners
Among the awarded projects were innovative designs and renovations that exemplified the synergy between energy efficiency and architectural brilliance. These projects set a benchmark for future developments in the ETICS sector, demonstrating how thoughtful design and sustainable practices can significantly reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.
One of the standout projects was a residential complex in Germany, which utilised cutting-edge ETICS solutions to achieve near-zero energy standards. Another notable project was a public building in Spain that integrated ETICS to enhance thermal performance while maintaining its historic facade, showcasing the versatility and adaptability of ETICS in various architectural contexts.
A Day of Learning and Networking
Beyond the awards, the event offered plenty of networking and learning opportunities. Attendees had lunch together before the EU Commission’s speech and the EAE Awards ceremony, with all other presentations happening before lunch. Discussions covered a wide range of topics, from the latest trends in the ETICS market to the new legislative framework under the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD).
Jakub highlighted the collaborative atmosphere, saying, “The presentations and discussions were highly informative, fostering a collaborative spirit among all participants. It was particularly valuable to hear from Stefan Moser of DG Energy about the role of national renovation plans in achieving EPBD goals.“
The Importance of EPS and ETICS in Achieving Energy Efficiency
Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) and External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems (ETICS) play a crucial role in the journey towards a more energy-efficient and sustainable Europe. EPS is a lightweight, durable, and highly efficient insulation material, ideal for use as building insulation. ETICS, on the other hand, is a system that combines various layers to provide superior thermal insulation for building exteriors, significantly reducing energy consumption and enhancing indoor comfort.
Jakub Stefaniak emphasised the importance of these materials, stating, “ ETICS with EPS is at the forefront of building innovation. It offers a cost-effective solution to reduce energy consumption, lower carbon emissions, and improve the overall energy performance of buildings. By integrating EPS in this system, we can make significant strides towards achieving the EU’s ambitious climate goals.“
EUMEPS’s Role in Advocating for an Energy-Efficient and Safe Europe
As the unified voice of the EPS industry in Europe, EUMEPS is dedicated to promoting the benefits of EPS and advocating for policies that support energy efficiency and sustainability. Through active engagement with EU regulators, policymakers, and industry stakeholders, EUMEPS strives to enhance the circularity of the EPS industry and showcase EPS as a smart choice for packaging and insulation.
“Our mission at EUMEPS is to drive the adoption of EPS solutions that contribute to a climate-neutral and resource-efficient Europe,” Jakub noted. “We are committed to supporting initiatives like the Renovation Wave and working collaboratively with partners to advance the circularity and sustainability of the EPS industry.“
The EAE Awards Ceremony 2024 was a resounding success, celebrating the synergy between energy efficiency and architectural excellence. EUMEPS’s sponsorship of the event underscores our dedication to promoting sustainable EPS solutions and supporting initiatives that align with the EU’s climate ambitions. As Jakub Stefaniak aptly put it, “The event was a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in driving the energy transition. We look forward to continuing our work with EAE and other partners.“
