Together with 31 European plastics associations, EUMEPS has co-signed a joint letter on the adoption of the rules to calculate chemical recycling content in plastics. All signees agree that using the mass balance approach is the key to successfully closing the gap between the existent and necessary quantities of plastic recyclate. Mechanical recycling should continue as the preferred option, although further investments are required across all technologies to increase recycling. This includes chemical recycling, which allows plastic waste, particularly feedstock unsuitable for mechanical recycling, to produce new plastics. While the value chain must urgently increase its efforts, regulators need to adopt the policy framework to make chemical recycling technologies widely available.
