The Antwerp Declaration for a European Industrial Deal - an initiative of Cefic, the European Chemical Industry Council - emerges as a pivotal framework advocating for a harmonious blend of industrial innovation and environmental stewardship within the European Union. EUMEPS, representing the Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) industry, has aligned its strategic endeavours with the declaration, signifying a commitment to bolstering Europe's industrial resilience while accentuating environmental sustainability. This is how EUMEPS's initiatives, challenges, collaborations, and vision, illustrate its integral role in advancing the Declaration's objectives.

The Antwerp Declaration: Europe's Blueprint for Sustainable Industry

The Antwerp Declaration, a visionary document endorsed by 990 organisations across 25 sectors, is a bold commitment to reshaping Europe's industrial landscape in harmony with the Green Deal's environmental aspirations. It articulates a compelling vision for Europe, urging a harmonious balance between maintaining industrial innovation and ensuring environmental sustainability. Key pillars of the declaration include:

  • Industrial Innovation and Production: The declaration emphasizes Europe's need to remain a beacon of industrial innovation, crucial for devising climate solutions and retaining high-quality jobs.
  • Energy and Investment Surge: It calls for an unprecedented increase in electricity production and a sixfold rise in industry investments to meet the ambitious 2040 and 2050 climate neutrality targets, highlighting the energy sector's pivotal role.
  • Strategic Autonomy: Stressing the importance of strategic autonomy, the declaration advocates for investments in basic and energy-intensive industries within Europe to reduce dependency and secure the continent's industrial future.

EUMEPS Initiatives: Spearheading Sustainable Practices

EUMEPS's commitment to the Antwerp Declaration's principles is demonstrated through its support for significant initiatives like the French CréaStyr Project alongside the National Association Elipso, as well as EUMEPS’s active participation in the European Insulation Platform consortium.

The CréaStyr Project, in particular, focuses on the recyclability of EPS, aiming for a future where 100% of EPS packaging is recycled in France, reflecting a robust commitment to sustainability and innovation. This project aligns with the Declaration's call for increased resource efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions, showcasing EUMEPS's proactive approach to advancing recycling technologies and practices within the EPS industry.

The European Insulation Platform represents a strategic collaboration among EUMEPS and other European associations representing the Building and Construction industry across Europe, promoting energy efficiency and sustainability through the building envelope, regardless of the material used. EUMEPS membership to the European Insulation Platform underscores its dedication to educating stakeholders about the benefits of insulation for energy conservation, directly contributing to the declaration's energy efficiency goals.

Micro-Campaigns: Amplifying EUMEPS's Green Message

In the last 6 months, EUMEPS has launched impactful micro-campaigns such as "EPS, Teammate for a Greener Future" and "EPS: The Perfect Green Fit" to communicate the vital role of EPS in achieving Europe’s Green Deal targets. These campaigns are meticulously designed to:

  • Showcase EPS's Versatility: Highlight EPS’s critical applications in insulation and packaging, demonstrating its contribution to energy efficiency, emissions reduction, and citizen safety.
  • Promote Eco-Efficiency: Emphasizing EPS's affordability and its significance in facilitating a transition to energy-efficient homes, particularly for low-income households in poorly insulated flats.
  • Advocate for Sustainable Solutions: Presenting EPS as an essential material in the drive toward climate neutrality, focusing on its longevity, performance, and cost-effectiveness as eco-efficient choices for large-scale insulation projects.

These micro-campaigns serve as a dynamic platform for EUMEPS to articulate the environmental benefits of EPS, advocating for its adoption across various sectors to drive Europe towards a more sustainable and climate-neutral future. By emphasizing the material's innovative, sustainable attributes and aligning with Europe's green objectives, these initiatives effectively reinforce EUMEPS's commitment to the Antwerp Declaration and its overarching goals.

EUMEPS's alignment with the Antwerp Declaration is a sign of close cross-industry cooperation advocating economic growth and sustainability and restore Europe’s competitiveness, as well as a testament to its forward-looking approach to fostering a sustainable, innovative, and resilient European industry. Through strategic initiatives like the CréaStyr Project and the European Insulation Platform, alongside engaging micro-campaigns, EUMEPS is setting a benchmark for industry-wide commitment to environmental sustainability and energy efficiency. These efforts not only exemplify EUMEPS's compliance with the declaration but also highlight its role as a leader in steering the EPS industry and Europe at large towards a greener, more sustainable future.
