EUMEPS has just published Technical Information: "PV Systems on EPS Flat Roofs Reduced Fire Spread Through Glass Fleece Installation".
Summary of Results
The highest overlapping installation of glass fleece sheets results in and further reduced fire spread on the flat roof.
- The cement-bonded particleboard, installed as the lower layer of the flat roof, prevents fire penetration through the roof into the building.
- The fire self-extinguished during the observation period.
These three observations collectively demonstrate that even PV system fires, left undetected for extended periods, do not pose an immediate total fire hazard for an EPS-insulated flat roof when combined with glass fleece and PVC membranes. The results are comparable to tests conducted with other flammable and non-flammable insulation materials.
PV systems can be safely installed on flat roofs with EPS insulation—whether on massive flat roof constructions or industrial lightweight roofs. Consequently, the efficient and safe expansion of renewable energy utilisation on EPS flat roofs does not present an increased risk. EPS enables safe, efficient, and cost-effective new constructions and modernisations.
