Morning Panel: Building the European Packaging Recycling Infrastructure

Most expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam packaging ends up in regular trash and landfills, even though EPS is recyclable. The European Parliament this summer passed new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), expected to enter into force in the last quarter of 2024.

The packaging and foam industries in recent years have taken their responsibility to develop circular economies for EPS with initiatives like EPSolutely in Austria. The recycling rate for EPS in Europe is inching up to 40%.

This session will examine the bottlenecks and possible solutions to achieving a fully circular economy for packaging materials and discuss

  • how to make EPS, XPET, ePP foam recycling commercially viable
  • how to minimise logistic and transport costs
  • how Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) can help show the benefits of polymer foam packaging

Speakers on the panel:

  • Virginie Bussières, Vice-President, External Affairs and Partnership, Polystyvert
  • Markus Kraft, Director Group Procurement & ESG, HIRSCH Servo AG
  • Hartmut Siebert, Head of Sales, Sulzer Chemtech
