Navigating Regulations: EUMEPS's Strategic Advocacy in Packaging and Environmental Policy

EUMEPS's role in advocating for the Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) industry extends into critical areas of environmental regulation, including the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and the proposed United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) plastics pollution treaty, to cite two examples. Through strategic involvement in these legislative frameworks, EUMEPS seeks to balance industry innovation with environmental responsibility, ensuring that EPS packaging remains at the forefront of sustainable solutions.

Advocacy in Action: PPWR

The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is an EU initiative aimed at reducing the environmental impact of packaging through the reduction, reuse and recycling of packaging waste. This is accomplished through ambitious recycling targets that encourage the design of recyclable packaging, and implementation of extended producer responsibility schemes to ensure manufacturers contribute to the cost of waste management.

EUMEPS has been instrumental in advocating for the EPS industry's commitment to sustainability and circular economy principles. By actively participating in consultations and discussions, EUMEPS works to ensure that new legislative measures recognise the unique advantages and recyclability of EPS. Our focus is the implementation of realistic, achievable targets that support innovation and environmental protection.

Engagement With UNEP: Ensuring Safety and Global Collaboration

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority, aiming to set the global environmental agenda, promote sustainable development, and encourage the sound management of natural resources. Established in 1972, it is working towards reducing environmental degradation and promoting a better understanding of environmental issues internationally.

Our involvement with UNEP and the ongoing discussions for the Global Plastics Pollution Treaty further showcase a commitment to addressing global environmental challenges. By aligning EUMEPS’s initiatives with UNEP's goals, the association contributes to international efforts, reducing plastic pollution, enhancing sustainability, and promoting circular economy models.
