“There are opportunities to really make a difference”

Angela is a Special Advisor in EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) & Innovation, supporting the EPS Group members within the British Plastics Federation and she accept to be interviewed to share her experiences in the EPS world.

Work and responsibilities

“My role is centred on driving sustainability and advocacy within the EPS industry through collaboration and projects and being the voice of the EPS industry. I work closely with various industry stakeholders across the entire EPS supply chain, including manufacturers, recyclers, waste management companies, researchers, and academia. I engage with local authorities, government and regulatory bodies, NGOs, trade associations, as well as brands and retailers. Together, we focus on driving sustainability within the sector and providing ongoing support to the industry as it adapts to new challenges and opportunities.”

Biggest challenges and achievements in her career

“The biggest challenge within my role is navigating regulatory changes within the EPS industry which faces evolving regulations, particularly regarding waste management, recycling, and environmental standards within the packaging and construction sector. Keeping up with these changes and driving advocacy to support the industry is both a challenge and an opportunity to drive innovation.

Taking a steer to drive innovation one of my biggest achievements is launching and driving industry sustainability initiatives that help drive sustainability across the EPS industry. This includes recently launching our new EPS Recycling Map as well as a YouGov survey which demonstrated strong public support for EPS recycling. Additionally, the EPS Group sponsorship of the LARAC annual dinner and conference was a success and an opportunity to drive recycling and local authority encourage collections in the UK.”

A word of advice

“My advice to young women interested in the EPS industry would be to embrace new ideas and thinking and have trust in yourself. The EPS industry, like many sectors in sustainability, offers immense opportunities to make a meaningful impact.

The EPS industry is constantly evolving and there will be opportunities to learn every day. Whether it's understanding the latest in recycling technologies or staying updated on environmental regulations, knowledge especially sharing knowledge with your peers is key and don’t be afraid to ask questions. To stay connected it is important to build relationships with members and stakeholders within the industry and it enables you to stay connected.

Within the EPS sector there is a need to hear from a range of voices and opinions to brainstorm new innovative projects for fresh ideas and perspectives and drive sustainability efforts. There are opportunities to really make a difference and a great industry to make a positive impact.”
